Open Day, Saturday, 24th May
Our Open Day provided an opportunity for prospective parents and their children to visit our great school and interact with staff and our students. What gives me the most pride is the way our students engage with our community. They greet them at the gates; others take them on school tours and answer their questions with honesty; others interact within a curriculum activity, as a musician, a barista, a cook or a helper and all the while happy to give up some time on their weekend to give back to their school. Our values of respect; belonging and growth are on display throughout the day.
I thank the many families who came to look, learn and listen about Kenmore SHS and the many staff members and some of our parents who fostered engaging activities throughout the day.
I look forward to welcoming these families to the Kenmore family in the near future.
The Year 7 Enrolment Interview Day follows Open Day, on Saturday, 14th June 2025. Please visit our website on https://kenmoreshs.eq.edu.au/enrolments/enrolling-at-our-school/year-7-in-2026 for further information and to schedule an enrolment interview appointment and download the application for enrolment forms.
Thank you to Mr Craig Hynes (Deputy Principal) and Marketing Officer, Mrs Kortnee Morcus McCormick and Enrolments Officer, Mrs Robyn Hannouf for coordinating the days.
National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is held annually from 27 May to 3 June, commemorating significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum on 27 May and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision on 3 June.
The theme for 2025, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
Australia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one, we have made great strides and experienced disappointing setbacks. Our school will revisit this history with our students in recognition of its significance in the past, now and from our inclusive future.
Twenty-five years ago, Corroboree 2000 brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous leaders in a historic call for reconciliation. We continue that work in 2025, inviting all Australians to join us in Bridging Now to Next – building a more united and respectful nation.

Supporting Year 11 Students
Supporting Year 11 Students: Navigating Term 1 Results, Wellbeing & Success Strategies
The transition into Year 11 brings a noticeable increase in academic expectations. For many students, receiving their Term 1 results can feel confronting—but it’s also an opportunity to reflect and make meaningful plans for the term ahead.
Despite the challenge, it’s encouraging to see that 91% of Year 11 students achieved an A–C standard across their subjects in Term 1, showing that most students are making a strong start in their senior phase of learning. For those who may not have met the mark, there are opportunities for improvement across the remaining terms.
Our recent Pulse wellbeing survey highlighted that 22% of students reported having no goals for the year ahead. Setting even small, achievable goals can help provide direction and motivation—especially during busy periods.
At assembly, Guidance Officer Anthea Daniels spoke with students about the importance of finding a healthy balance and building habits that support both academic performance and overall wellbeing. While study is important, a life filled with only study can actually become counterproductive—burnout, disconnection, and lack of motivation are real risks. Success is more likely when students feel balanced, engaged, and well-supported across all areas of life.
Some strategies shared with students included:
- Learning how to manage stress and tough times in healthy ways
- Staying involved in hobbies and activities that bring joy and purpose
- Building and maintaining strong friendships and support networks
- Keeping physically active
- Prioritising sleep and rest
- Eating nutritious food and staying hydrated
We encourage parents to support these messages at home by helping their young people maintain balance—not by removing all non-academic activities, but by ensuring that study becomes a part of a sustainable and fulfilling routine.

Extension Requests & Assessment Support
As we move further into the assessment calendar, please note that extensions can only be granted when valid supporting evidence is provided, such as a medical certificate or formal documentation. Extensions cannot be approved simply due to feeling behind or overwhelmed—though we strongly encourage students to reach out for support early if they are struggling.
Let’s continue working together to support our students in finding their rhythm, setting meaningful goals, and creating a balanced and positive Year 11 journey.

Year 7 German Immersion Science
Students in year 7 German Immersion Science have been learning about the earth, moon and sun and their movements relative to each other. In order to improve their understanding students have made models to show the movements of these celestial bodies. A lot of effort and creativity went into these and some of their work is incredible.

GIP Information Evening
On Thursday the 1st of May the German Immersion Program had its annual Information evening. Parents and their year 4, 5 and 6 children came along to listen to interesting information and lots of inspiring stories told by teachers, past students, current students and parents of students.
The primary school students were then entertained and got to do lots of hands-on activities to give them a taste of what it is like being a German Immersion student at Kenmore SHS.
Thank you to all of the German Immersion teachers for an informative and inspiring evening, families left feeling excited to start their high school journey.

Year 9 Japanese

Our recent Year 9 Japanese shopping excursion was a fun and eye-opening experience for our students. As they explored the local shopping centre, they became keen observers—spotting Japanese characters on packaging, shop signs, and promotional displays. The trip brought classroom learning to life, encouraging students to reflect and appreciate the richness of the cultures around us. It was a joyful day that fostered curiosity, respect, and global awareness—all while enjoying time together outside the classroom.
My New Gallery

Reflection from a student:
Today I went to the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. I explored Japanese culture at Daiso, Hanaro Mart and other shops. It was very interesting and fun. I did some shopping and ate sushi. I love exploring Japanese culture and seeing how many nations have come to Australia allowing us to explore shops and food like I did today.

Talented German Immersion Students
Genevieve Krause

Over the weekend I performed in a part of a musical show, “Andrew Loyd Webber: On Stage” by Paterson Productions. It was a tribute to the legendary composer with songs from famous musicals like Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, School of Rock and many more. During this experience I learnt so much from the amazing Musical Directors, our Director and the live orchestra. The cast was made up of many artists of all ages (10+) who come from various training backgrounds and experience. It was so inspiring to work with these professionals in rehearsals and on stage for the 4 performances. It is a fantastic way to get to know lots of different people, learn more about performing and bring joy to the audiences.

Herr de Jong

The 2025 regatta season has begun! So far, we have had two regattas, both at Wyaralong dam. Our Kenmore rowers have been great on the water, with already some great results. A special note goes to those older rowers who are being great role-models for our newbies.
I’d like to also mention a particularly thrilling race from Saturday; our year 10 boys composite quad took Trinity Lutheran Right to the line over 1500m and ended up winning by less than half a second! Great rowing.

German Immersion Support Group Bake Sale
Over the weekend, the year 7 German Immersion students and support group held a successful bake sale to support their GIEP program. The event featured an impressive spread of homemade treats including beautifully decorated cupcakes, apple and berry strudel, mini Schultüten (traditional German gift for first day of school), authentic pretzels, cookies, hedgehog & caramel slices, and gluten-free options. The sale attracted possible new students and several community members who were keen to support the initiative. All funds raised from the bake sale will go towards the GIEP program. There was a great turnout and generous donations, the event exceeded its fundraising goals. Thanks to all who gave of their time and effort to support the event.

New additions to the Certificate III Early Childhood Care and Education Classroom
This week the Year 11 and 12 VEC students were surprised with a baby shower and gender reveal for three new virtual babies. The students were so eager to name the babies and take turns in learning how to comfort (and handle) the babies. These dolls will enrich the practical components of their learning and to improve their confidence when in the workplace.

Term Two VOC Practical Assessment Day

On Friday 23rd of May our Year 11 students completed their fifth VOC practical assessment day. While most students were handling tools and servicing cars, we had our German Immersion and Hospitatlity students engaged in Barista training and the Tourism students went to Tangalooma Eco Resort to better understand the behind the scenes of the tourism industry.
These days are an essential part of the VOC Program as they allow the students to not only complete the practical components of their course, but also engage in real-world learning.
A reminder that the Year 11 students will have their last VOC Practical assessment day on Thursday 26th June (Week 10). Please ensure your child is in attendance so that they can complete their certificates on time at the end of the term.
Pullenvale State School Under 8’s Day
Last week our Year 11 Early Childcare students were invited to Under 8’s Day at Pullenvale State School, where they led activities for the younger students. They spent the morning face painting and facilitating craft activities.

Music Extension
Students were thrilled when Kaboom Percussion visited our school with their energetic and interactive show. Using instruments made from plastic pigs, printed drums, and everyday objects, they amazed everyone with their creativity and rhythm. The incursion supported students’ understanding of rhythm, timbre, and the creative possibilities of sound production - a memorable performance that made music exciting and accessible for all.

Queensland Youth Music Awards
We were proud to unveil our new 2025 Music Uniform as over 90 students from our Chorale took to the stage at the Queensland Youth Music Awards on Friday, 23rd May. This prestigious event brings together schools from both the public and private sectors to compete under a set of adjudicated criteria.
Our Chorale students delivered an outstanding performance and were thrilled to receive a Silver Award on the night. The experience was not only a celebration of their hard work but also valuable preparation for the upcoming Choral Fanfare competition in Week 6, where all three of our choirs will perform at the district heats.

Brookfield’s Got Talent – WINNERS!
A huge congratulations to our talented Year 10 and 11 Music Extension students — Eleanor, Toby, Sam, Hamish, and Maisie — who wowed the crowd at the 2025 Brookfield Show’s “Brookfield’s Got Talent” event and claimed first place!

Drama
In week 2, the Years 7 to 10 drama classes had the opportunity to attend a performance of Toxic by Mashed Theatre — an experience that hopefully left a lasting impact on students and sparked critical reflection on the challenges faced by today’s youth. Toxic is a powerful two-actor production that follows the story of Edgar, a fifteen-year-old boy caught in a whirlwind of peer pressure, risky behaviour, and emotional turmoil. From experimenting with vaping to facing the consequences of a life-altering accident, the play offers a raw and realistic portrayal of teenage decision-making and the ripple effects it can create. It served not only as a compelling theatrical experience but also as a valuable educational resource, aligning directly with the students’ current focus on dramatic analysis and social issues in performance.

As part of their assessment, students have been crafting analytical essays in response to the production. These essays explored key dramatic elements while also delving into the social messages embedded in the play’s content.
Watching Toxic provided students with a real-world example of how theatre can be used as a powerful medium for social commentary and personal reflection. It also encouraged them to think critically about the choices young people face and the pressures that influence them — themes that are not only relevant to their studies but to their lives outside the classroom. We thank Mashed Theatre for delivering such a thought-provoking performance and look forward to seeing the depth of insight our students bring to their upcoming essays.
Year 7 Media - Stop Motion Filming
Last week in Media Arts, our talented Year 7 students stepped into the director’s chair as they filmed their very own stop motion advertisements. After weeks of planning, scripting, and crafting sets and characters, students used stop motion techniques to bring their ideas to life—frame by frame.
From quirky snack commercials to clever homework helpers, the projects across all three classes are packed with imagination and personality. Using iPads and GODOX lights, students learned the importance of stability, attention to detail, and teamwork. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they took on roles as animators, creating the illusion of movement with over 200 photos.
Well done to all our budding Year 7 film makers—your hard work and creativity is truly impressive! We can’t wait to share some of the finished products in exhibitions in Q Block.

Musical 2025 - The Little Mermaid
Over four days and five magical performances, our school’s production of The Little Mermaid transported audiences “under the sea” with a dazzling showcase of talent, teamwork, and creativity. From the opening scene to the final bow, the show was a spectacular celebration of student achievement, bringing the beloved Disney classic to life with heart, humour, and impressive production values.
The cast delivered captivating performances, with standout vocals, expressive acting, and dynamic choreography that had audiences cheering night after night. Our lead actors brought depth and charm to iconic characters like Ariel, Prince Eric, Sebastian, Scuttle and Ursula, while the ensemble added energy and colour to every scene—from lively seagulls to shimmering sea creatures.
A special mention must go to our incredible band, whose live music brought the score to life and added another layer of energy and emotion to the performance. Their dedication and professionalism helped create a rich, immersive atmosphere that transported audiences into Ariel’s underwater world.
Behind the scenes, our dedicated crew, costume designers, set builders, and tech team worked tirelessly to create a visually stunning experience. The elaborate sets, vibrant costumes, and seamless lighting and sound effects all contributed to a production that impressed night after night.
Throughout the entire process, our school values of respect, belonging and growth were at the heart of the production. Students supported one another across year levels and disciplines, showed deep respect for each other’s contributions, and grew tremendously in confidence, skill, and character. Whether on stage, in the orchestra pit, or behind the scenes, every participant played an essential role in making the show a success.
Each of the five performances was met with enthusiastic applause and heartfelt praise from families, friends, and community members, making The Little Mermaid a truly unforgettable event.

Congratulations to everyone involved for bringing our school community together in such a magical and meaningful way.

Halle turns creativity into enterprise

Halle is a Year 12 TALS-supported student who is bringing a touch of magic to her learning through a unique business project. She is using her digitally created artworks to develop and sell t-shirts within the school community.
As part of her learning towards the Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA), Halle is building skills in enterprise, communication and design. Her current project features a collection of t-shirts that display her whimsical, unicorn-inspired artwork. The first release was a great success, with staff members showing strong support by purchasing her designs.
This project is more than a creative outlet. It supports Halle’s development across a range of curriculum areas while giving her an opportunity to share her voice through art. Her style is vibrant, imaginative and refreshingly original, drawing from the tradition of outsider art.
Through this work, Halle is growing in confidence and independence. She is developing a sense of pride in her achievements, and we are proud to support her on this journey.
